Fashion Designer Nelli Millard New Fashion Trend

Sewing since she was 10, Russian-born seamstress now runs a business in Bend

Nelli Millard, born and raised in Russia, has transported her background and skills to the High Desert, where she operates an alteration and custom clothing shop off Greenwood Avenue in Bend.

Sewing By Nelli Millard, owned and operated by fashion designer Millard, 39, offers same- or next-day alteration services, custom clothing creations and cutouts of custom patterns for customers to sew themselves.

Prices range from $14 to hem a pair of design fashion jeans to $800 for an original wedding dress, including materials.

“It’s my passion,” Millard said about designing and creating custom clothing. “I did it a lot in Russia. People here prefer more buying (of clothes), but sometimes you meet people who say, ‘Oh, you do that?’”

Millard designs many kinds of clothing, including original prom and wedding dresses. She sometimes uses fabric that her mother sends to her from Russia and she follows fashion updates in her home country and the U.S.

Millard, from Pyatigorsk, in southwest Russia, started modeling for her mother’s sewing studio at the age of 6.

“She worked all her life,” Millard said about her mother. “She did the same thing. She was my teacher and I followed her all over.”

Millard started sewing when she was 10 and making most of her clothes at age 14.

Two years later, at the age of 16, Millard went to a technical college in Stavropol, also in southwest Russia, and received a four-year degree in clothing design and management.

She continued to work as a teacher at the college in practical sewing and pattern making before working at a sewing and fashion studio in her hometown. While there, she worked as a cutter for custom clothing, conducted first-fittings and was then promoted to manager.

Nelli Millard moved to Brookings and married her husband in 2002. She started her business there and reopened it in Bend in 2006 after they moved to Central Oregon for quality of life.

“I fell in love with Bend,” Millard said. “It’s very similar to my town — the climate a little bit and it is a resort. I grew up in a resort.”

Millard has noticed differences since the recession started. Many of her clients like fashion models, celebrity, actress - now request alteration and repair of old and casual clothing.

“It’s the economy,” Millard said. “I had part of the clientele that are fixing suits for new jobs, but now the economy has slowed down and I feel it.”

Millard has plans to expand the design portion of her business. She met Dru Broekemeier last fall, a clothing designer from Los Angeles who now lives in Bend, and the two have started NelliDru Design. Their clothing will debut this fall at the Portland Fashion Week and at a fashion trade show in Los Angeles. The events allow clothing designers to showcase their latest trends to retail buyers in the fashion industry.

Both women design the clothing and Broekemeier focuses on marketing, while Millard creates the patterns and first samples.

At her Bend business, Millard is able to focus on expedient repair service and creative custom clothing due to her longtime background in the industry.

“That’s what I’m able to do,” Millard said, “because I learned it and studied it and experienced it a lot.”

We've met the Project Runway designers, but now it's time to meet their models, who will also be starring in their own companion series, Models of the Runway.

Lifetime announced the 16 models who will work it on the catwalk in hopes of getting paired with the winning designer. The women range in height from 5-foot-8-inches to 6 feet tall (models dare not share their ages), and hail from such places as Israel, Japan, Singapore and Venezuela.

The new series gives audiences a behind-the-scenes look at Project runway modeling, only this time from the models' perspective. And the last leggy lady standing wins a $25,000 cash prize from L'Oreal Skin Genesis and a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine

Greeks hit runway to raise money

Dance music blasted last night in Kimmel’s Rosenthal Pavilion as models strutted down a brightly lit catwalk models. The fashion world isn’t the typical scene for many of the models at this show — they were all members of Alpha Epsilon Phi and Delta Phi Epsilon at NYU, participating in the Runway for Life fashion show.

Advertised with the tagline “Fashion. Fights. Cancer.” Runway for Life was organized to help the two sororities raise $5,000 for Relay for Life, an annual, overnight fundraising program for the American Cancer Society. This year, Relay for Life will take place at 6:00 p.m. on April 18 in the Coles Sports Center.

“Instead of doing our typical fundraising events this year, we wanted to do something that got a lot more of the community involved,” said CAS junior Alx Bear, a member of Alpha Epsilon Phi who coordinated the event.

After some coaching from the NYU Modeling Club, 18 sorority members modeled a total of 34 looks at the Runway for Life, and members of the Zeta Beta Tau and Zeta Psi fraternities escorted the female models. A cappella group, Mass Transit, performed after the show.

“It’s something fun, something different to do, and it’s for a great cause,” said Delta Phi Epsilon president Emily Long, a senior in the College of Nursing. “It’s really great that the two sororities are doing it together because so often people think there’s rivalries between sororities, but AEPhi and us: We’re friends.”

Most of the audiences were NYU students involved in Greek life. “It was so much fun to see my sisters dressed up like real fashion models, almost unrecognizable,” Delta Phi Epsilon member and Steinhardt junior Emma Matusow said.

Fashion designer Csilla Somogyi, whose designs were part of the show, contributed items to the event’s silent auction and raffle and had some of her fashions available for purchase at the event with all of the proceeds going towards Relay for Life.

The attitude of the show’s fashions, she said, was “young and fearless and happy and single.” “The best thing is that no one fell,” Delta Phi Epsilon member and model Nicole Badke said.

The upcoming fashion exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute is about the female model as muse, but what was on the minds of much of the fashion industry this week was Michelle Obama as muse. Of course there was speculation about whether she would attend any runway shows (we got White House press secretary Desiree Rogers instead).

But Obama's presence was felt in other ways. First in the subtle shift in the designer hierarchy. Where Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera used to be TV model pacesetters and favorites of Laura Bush and Hillary Rodham Clinton, this season their clothes felt ancient. There was as much or more interest in collections by a new generation of designer talents Jason Wu, Thakoon Panichgul and Narciso Rodriguez, all of whom have dressed the new first lady. A 'Project Runway' fan defends it to reality TV critics

"Project Runway" is the show I name whenever I am asked to defend reality TV or my unwillingness to condemn it all out of hand. The popular modeling photography & designing competition finished its fifth season on Bravo last October and now circles in a holding pattern over its intended new network, Lifetime, while lawyers from its old home try to keep it from landing. (The disputed sixth season, minus its finale, has already been filmed -- and, for the first time, in Los Angeles.) I might also mention "Top Chef" as part of my reality defense, but "Top Chef" is just "Project Runway" with food.

You can watch it in a number of ways. (It isn't necessary to care much about fashion, or know anything about it, but of course it does add something.) You can take it as a "Real World"-style Stressful Dormitory series, or as a sort of sporting event, or as a celebration of fabulousness, or of work, or even an arts-and-crafts show, albeit of an unusually tense kind. Unlike such superficially similar contests as "Survivor" and "The Apprentice," its challenges are not metaphorical abstractions of the theme but are the thing itself: It is a show about making clothes in which clothes are made. As with every reality show, its content is manipulated by its producers, but there is nothing pretend about what gets done.

"Project Runway" also has the appointments of a fairy tale -- gold spun from straw overnight, cleverness rewarded -- and there is something of Jiminy Cricket about Tim Gunn, who acts as liaison between the judges and the contestants and is the voice of encouragement and (usually ignored) constructive criticism. (When Gunn stepped in to replace an injured Jennifer Lopez as a judge of last season's finale, it felt wrong, almost a violation of trust.) What the designers can produce -- something from nothing, in no time at all -- is as good as magic; yet we are also shown, to some extent, how they do it, and the fascinating way in which different sensibilities emerge in the face of an identical task.

There is no way to win "Project Runway" other than by doing good work; it is a contest without strategy. (Attempts to second-guess the judges, or even to bend to their criticisms, are as likely as not to fail.) The show plays up the interpersonal aggravations and disputes -- it's clear from post-series cast interviews that conflicts are often exaggerated for effect. And a subtle disclaimer runs at the end of every episode stating that the on-screen judges -- Heidi Klum, "top American designer" Michael Kors and fashion-mag editor Nina Garcia, joined by a celebrity judge each week -- are not the sole arbiters of who goes home and who gets to stay. But over the long haul, most of the time, the better designers tend to survive.

We talk of people "deserving" to win, because they are good in some selfless way or because they have been the victims of horrible bad luck -- victim-heroes -- or deserving to lose, because they are bad people with too much good luck. These are desserts of the "just" kind -- cosmic settling of accounts -- and reality TV can make a feast of them.

But in "Project Runway," all that matters is talent. Being nice helps only in that it may make other players more likely to aid you in a pinch. By the same token, being a jerk will do you no good either. But it won't do you any harm, if you have vision and skill.

Just now, the pilot and crew who safely landed a crippled airliner in the Hudson River in New York City are being feted, rightly, as heroes. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg called Capt. Chesley Sullenberger "incredibly brave," but as Sullenberger himself says, they were only doing their job. Bravery doesn't enter into it. Ability, and the ability not to fold under pressure -- these things are worth celebrating for what they are. They don't need to be dressed up with extraneous merits.

And that's why I love "Project Runway."

How to walk in heels

The difference between sultry stilettos and frumpy pumps is 1.9cm, or so says Victor Chu, a former shoe designer who has taught women the art of sexy walking in ankle snappers.Chu says high heels and happy feet are not an oxymoron, if only women hold themselves correctly while walking."Unsexy shoes are anything under 7cm," Chu said. "A 5.1cm heel is a little dowdy. Too classical."

Plenty of people could benefit from lessons -- everyone from the fictional Carrie Bradshaw, who took a famously embarrassing catwalk spill in TV's Sex and the City to the real-life runway television models for Pucci, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana who fell during Milan Fashion Week in 2008, and even Miss USA, Crystal Stewart, who took a tumble at the Miss Universe pageant in July -- as did her predecessor in 2007. (The YouTube clip has been viewed nearly 3 million times.)

Chu may not have walked a mile in another woman's Manolos, but his experience designing sport and dress shoes as a consultant for the Tommy Hilfiger label from 2000 to 2004 gave him a different kind of perspective. He decided he had a calling to share his know-how while chatting with a colleague, Cece Chin, who has her own line called 80 20 shoes.

As they sat on a park bench in New York, the conversation turned to wondering why every woman they knew had a problem walking in high heels. “There’s only so much you can do to a shoe's heel to make it comfortable, before you make it unsexy," Chu recalled saying. "Then we said, 'Wait! How do the Rockettes do it?' "

It turned out that a friend of theirs danced for the Rockettes, the precision dance company which performs at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan.She told them the key to wearing high heels is in walking mechanics.Most women incorrectly shuffle their feet, placing their weight on the ball of the foot and throwing their bodies off-balance, Chu learned.

It sounds simple, Chu says, but the three keys to wearing very high heels successfully are:

-- Standing up straight, as if you were pulling a string from the top of your head

-- Keeping your abdominal muscles taut by sucking your belly button in toward your spine, which pulls your body weight back onto your heels

-- Walking heel to toe with a slightly exaggerated hip sway, rather than mincing around on the ball of the foot.

Marilyn Monroe photo could set record auction price

NEW YORK - Despite an economic recession and recent dives in art prices, a photograph of Marilyn Monroe could sell for a record price when it is auctioned next week, Christie’s said on Friday.

The image by Bert Stern, one of the last pictures of Monroe before her death, could break the $63,000 mark set in 1994, according to the auction house. Both are part of the Constantiner Collection, which includes the largest-ever grouping of Monroe photos to come to market, more than 100 in all.

“She is an embodiment of the idea of glamour,” said Philippe Garner, international director of photographs at Christie’s.The collection traces Monroe’s progression from “a fresh-faced ambitious young girl who wanted to make it in Hollywood, to this more mature but in some ways troubled and confused woman who had the dilemma of trying to disentangle her identity from her audience’s expectations,” he told Reuters.

She was still a teenager named Norma Jeane Baker when she first posed for photographer Andre de Dienes, who was instrumental in launching Monroe into a modeling career and, eventually, stardom. One of those early photo shoots resulted in a classic 1945 portrait of Monroe — still a brunette then — in front of a farm house, hay at her bare feet, smiling at someone behind the camera.

Leon and Michaela Constantiner began buying photos of glamour and style icons in the early 1990s. Their collection also includes works William Klein, Herb Ritts, Irving Penn, and scores of prints by Newton, including several life-size nudes estimated at up to $600,000.

Many of the images are already well-known. They appeared in mass market media and helped define the post-war period, Garner said. That contrasts with much contemporary model photography, which is made for galleries and museums, rather than destined for magazines.

Some of the famous faces whose images are up for sale: models Kate Moss and Linda Evangelista, singers Michael Hutchence and David Bowie, as well as actors Charlotte Rampling, Al Pacino, James Dean and Katharine Hepburn. Fidel Castro and Margaret Thatcher also appear.

The truth about those shots?

“As far as I understand, there was an air hose (under that grate),” said senior specialist Stuart Alexander. “You got all the press there; you want to make sure you have a great show.”

America’s Next Top fashion models – Behind the Runway I hate these types of episodes. Season recaps without officially being reruns. In case you missed it, come watch our mid-cycle overview all over again with new, unseen footage! The lazy ANTM producers must think we’re dumb. The hardcore, faithful fans have seen this all before. And for those who haven’t been watching up until this point, you don’t need to know what’s been going on. Yes, sometimes behind-the-scenes antics and interviews can be fun to watch. But for the most part, they’re just filler for empty episodes when the cast and crew stop production for a strike or an extended vacay in Cabo.

This week’s ep takes an unnecessary trip down Memory Lane, revisiting past contestants, previous challenges, and pose-offs galore. Remember The Top model connect Institute of Technology, Alpha J, Beta Jay, and Tyrabot? Yeah, I wish I could forget them all, too. How about Hannah’s re-enactment with Tyra of a run-in with a moose or Isis’ initial confession of being “born in the wrong body”? And what of Sharaun, Cycle 11’s first reject and one of the fakest, most annoying contestants to make it through to the semi-finals? The hour is packed with plenty of other familiar stuff like the “Voting is Sexy” photo shoot, the Jeremy Scott runway show, Sheena’s hoochieness, Marjorie’s twitchiness, and makeovers.

Some of the cutting-room floor scenes that are shared with us include: Samantha keeping a stiff upper lip while sleeping on the floor the first night in the Top Model House; an argument between Sheena and Elina over animal rights; Nikeysha dropping some funky rhymes in the hot tub; talcum powder play-fights between Brittany R. and Isis; Marjorie’s backstage “love affair” with Analeigh; Joslyn’s stage debut with the Misfit of Magic; and more.

I definitely could’ve done without watching the girls chase a bee from the Top Model House. Or knowing how Alaska Pixie Dust protects Hannah from mean girls. Or how McKey’s allegedly trying to fatten the other girls up with homemade French onion soup. Or what water conservation in Tyra World looks like (Samantha, Clark, and Lauren Brie squooshed and covered in bubbles in the bathtub). Okay, there’s a lot I could’ve done without seeing this week.

After living through the first six weeks of ANTM (all over again), here are the remaining seven contestants:

USA : Xpressions opened 'Blazed the Runway' model fashion show

In Tilson Auditorium, Xpressions opened “Blazed the Runway” with models fashion show which was enjoyable and entertaining, conveyed the President of the Group, Tyanna Jackson. It had initially started as a modeling troupe at ISU in 1985 by Mike Robinson.

The show included intermission acts from groups Flawless, Squad and an opening act from the rap group, Trendsettas.

Xpressions have tried to introduce a sense of fashion and diversity as a group and promote fun among students. The group has been working for this show since the beginning of the academic year and started to crack down at the beginning of the spring semester.

MC's shared a handful of announcements and jokes to keep the show alive and entertained while introducing the 8 Degrees of fashion throughout the show.

DJ King Midas kept students dancing and singing in their seats.
Marcquita Tyler, a freshman Business management major and Spanish minor said, he felt it was classy for ladies and loved fashion and modeling. He also told that his favorite part of the show was the intermission and the squad performance.

Jackson said Xpressions will be taking a trip to Murray State University in Kentucky to perform for BET on April 29 2006, which was very important to them and would like to achieve maximum in the form of support and donations.

Britain's fashion industry slammed for promoting 'throwaway fashion'

London, Aug 20 (ANI): A new scathing report has accused Britain's fashion industry for encouraging a "throwaway society".

The report by the House of Lords Science Committee attacked the culture of "fast fashion" as the committee urged ministers to do more to cut Britain's mountains of commercial and domestic waste.

Peers warned that cheap fashions "encourage consumers to dispose of clothes which have only been worn a few times in favour of new, cheap garments which themselves will also go out of fashion model and be discarded within a matter of months", reports The Independent.

The House of Lords committee also bemoaned the growth of electronic goods, which are thrown away even though they still work.

It called on ministers to cut VAT rates for goods made from sustainable materials and said that tax should also be reduced for repairs to encourage people to keep their consumer goods longer. (ANI)

4. Fashion Diva- Her middle name is style. Keeping up with fashion trends can get quite expensive. She hire a model agents for it. She desires to look at her finances strongly in order to keep away from overspending.

5. Sporty Lady- She loves her jeans and sneakers and will not go anywhere with out them. This will help her look and feel better, even if the changes are temporary.

6. Comfy Carmen-Carmen is all about comfort. She chooses her attire based on the way it feels. She should steer away from bulky looking shoes that will make her feet look wider or bigger and clothing that fit too loosely. Clothes that are too big will make anyone look heavier and older as like glamour models wearing.

7. Elegant Elenin- Elenin is forever dress to make an impression. She never allows any body to see her dressed downhill. Though, it will be advantageous for her to loosen up or dress comfortably on one occasion. People can not look perfect all the time.

8. Stuck in time- This type of person does not remember the last time she bought a piece of clothing. She will not stop wearing her clothes until it has a hole in it.

Balanced Brianna- She probably has one of the other personal styles mentioned in this guide but, understands clearly the certain situations require she dresses up or down and never like to look similar to any figure model. She will not be hesitant to try a new style as long as it does not make her look like a fool.

How to Get in Shape Quickly

Every fashion model wants to know how to get in shape quickly and effortlessly. Unfortunately, there is no real way to get into shape without putting forth some effort. The good new is you can use techniques that will yield excellent results in little time at all.

It is important to make a distinction between learning how to lose weight and learning how to get in shape. There are plenty of individuals who are thin but in awful shape. Just because a person is skinny does not make that person healthy.

Healthy individuals who take pride in maintaining a consistent exercise routine are often a little meatier than your average runway model. Many of us spend quite a bit of time researching how to get in shape and we put those suggestions into action. Starving and over exerting yourself will not get you very far.

When I was a teacher in high school I saw so many young girls taking an unhealthy approach to getting into shape. They often skipped breakfast and picked at a few vegetables during their lunch breaks. These girls were not learning how to get into shape. They were learning how to deplete their bodies of important nutrients.

The result was often young ladies who were thin and tired. Many of women model had difficulty concentrating and some couldn't run a single lap around the gym. I found this to be very upsetting because there is no reason for this. Fortunately, the girls' physical education teacher took action.

The gym teacher started a "learn how to get in shape" program for her students. The girls were thrilled to earn credit for this program. They learned about using core muscles for strength and support as well as ways to build lean muscle mass and look like promotional models. Part of the focus was feeding those muscles to get the maximum results.

They engaged in healthy exercise programs that weren't too overwhelming and they learned to appreciate the difference between learning how to get thin and learning how to get in shape. The program was a geat success.

In fact, the program was so popular among the students that the staff, including myself, became involved. We served as models needed for the students who helped their teachers learn how to get in shape. My pupils were excited to see that I bought a treadmill and started a consistent workout plan.
